Telsar makes agreement to service lasers - deal could increase business 50%
WOOD RIVER - Telsar Laboratories has signed a service agreement with a Swiss laser manufacturer that could increase for the metro-east business' output by as much as 50 percent.
As the nation's largest independent laser repair service, Wood River-based Telsar Laboratories has provided laser maintenance and design manufacturing and medical companies, including Bausch & Lomb. The newest contract with Ziemar Ophthalmic of Port Switzerland will bring the Swiss manufacturer's line of lasers used in LASIK surgery to the United States. The Swiss company has developed a laser keratome, which is used to slice the top layer of the cornea in LASIK surgery.
Telsar will provide service and training for Ziemer USA and will rent space for about three of the Swiss company's employees in Wood River on a year-by-year basis. Telsar founder, president and chief executive officer J. Peter Zimmer said his company does all of its service work for Ziemer in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
"We install lasers, set them up, and make sure it works," Zimmer said
Zimmer also said most high-tech laser manufacturers want to create a presence in the United States, but have difficulty. That's where Telsar comes in.
"We can provide service at a reasonable cost and keep costs way down until it becomes profitable for them," he said. "We can help them develop their own professional service center, which is what we did for Bausch & Lomb."
Zimmer founded the company in his basement in 1983. Eventually establishing offices in Alton, Telsar steadily grew by acquiring other companies. Today, in Wood River, the company employs 20 and includes Telsar Computer and LAN Services Inc., which designs, sells and services computer networks for business, educational, banking and medical businesses in the St. Louis area.
Telsar signs on to repair, service products for Ziemer Ophthalmic
Telsar Laboratories is envisioning a 50 percent jump in revenue after landing a European contract April 1.
The Wood River, IL based firm signed a deal with Ziemer Ophthalmic of Port, Switzerland, to repair and service the diagnostic and surgical laser equipment maker's products across the United States. Ziemer's equipment is used nationwide by private physicians' offices and hospitals.
